The U.S. War Department issues General Order No. 143, allowing the enlistment of U.S. Colored Troops.

1864
Union and Confederate troops face off at the Battle of Olustee

Union and Confederate troops face off at the Battle of Olustee, near Lake City. It was the largest battle of the war to take place in Florida, and involved three regiments of U.S. Colored Troops, a number of who were killed in the fighting. The Confederate troops successfully repelled the Union Army.
